Looking for some nice weekend breaks in Europe? Then you have come to the right place.

Europe is a magical continent for the ones that do not live there. Who doesn’t have a friend or relative that has the wish to visit Paris, Rome or Amsterdam? Europe is a cultural treasure with a lot of places that breath history from all its pores. Many a celebrity from the USA even gets married in small towns in countries like Italy, France or Spain, as those areas spell “romance.” But you do not have to be a celebrity or someone with a big pocket full of cash for weekend breaks in Europe.

There is tons of possibilities for romantic weekend breaks in Europe and I will give you a shortlist of what I think are some greates places to travel in Europe. One of the most beautiful places in Europe in my opinion is Norway. The country is so huge, that you could spend your whole weekend break in the car driving from south to north. Now, if you want to do something very special, you travel to Tromsø in the North of Norway. I know, it isn’t a place you reach without a bit of travel, but from my own experience I can tell you, this area of Norway is breathtaking. If you visit it in winter (when it is actually dark 24-7) you can watch the Northern Light and this is something you must have experienced at least once in your life. The city actually has a nickname which will sound familiar to everyone: Paris of the North. You can see a panoramic view of the city below.

The city (approximately 65.000 inhabitants, with over 100[!!] different nationalities) is actually situated above the Polar Circle (which sounds awefully cold, I know), however, the lowest temperature every measured in the city is only minus 18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit).

Further sites to see are the Polar Museum, the Arctic Cathedral and the many, many bars and pubs. The City is a real student city. They visit the pubs in droves after college hours.

Tromsø is only 1 hour and 50 minutes away from Oslo by plane, so when you make it a long weekend, you have plenty of time to explore this small and idyllic city. And who knows, maybe you run into one of the famous residents of the city like Lene Marlin (and if you don’t know who she is, watch the video below, I bet you have heard her music before on the radio).

I can imagine you might have something warmer in mind when you think of weekend breaks in Europe (and something a bit closer to “civilization”), so let’s go south until we arrive at a much warmer city: Ajaccio on the French Island of Corsica. Like Tromsø, Ajaccio is a city with about 65000 inhabitants, but the temperatures are a little more comfortable and the sun shines practically the whole summer.

When I last visited the city in 1991, I visited the many beaches in the vicinity of the city and of course visited the house where Napoleon was born. Napoleon has a prominent place in the city with his statues and the many, many street names that refer to him.

When you visit Ajaccio, you better eat some pizza. I tried several places and the quality of the food in Ajaccio is outstanding. Pizza’s are still made on grills with wood fires and you better believe me if I say that there is no better pizza than one that is made on such a grill.
